9 Steps To Replace Trailer Axles

When looking for portable home trailers, selecting the appropriate weight and having the proper trailer axles for your car is critical. Four-wheel, two-wheel, and cross-over trailer axles and tires are the most often utilized trailer axles and wheels. The spacing between the axle and the wheel distinguishes these two types of trailer axles and wheels from one another. Four-wheel-drive wheels and axles have more significant space between the wheel and the axle than other kinds of wheels and axles. These are often the trailers used for smaller travel trailers or prefabricated houses that weigh less than a ton.

Step 1: Remove the trailer wheels

If you use a T-wrench or ratchet to manually operate, please ensure that the weight of the trailer remains on the floor when unscrewing the nut. Raise the trailer while keeping the lug nut free to remove the lug bolt and wheel. If using an impact gun, make sure to immediately lift the trailer. If the lug bolt studs come off or rotate in the hub, hammer them out from the rear of the intersection with a wooden mallet and replace them with new studs to restore correct alignment. New studs can be inserted into the wheel hub by pressing in from the rear. Splines prevent them from rotating.Agricultural Trailer Parts 8 Lug Trailer Half Axle Hub With Spindle

Step 2: Remove the bearing cover

If a bearing cover is installed, the bearing cover (also known as the bearing partner) can be removed when the wheels are closed. This can be achieved by lightly tapping the edge of the bearing cover with a rubber hammer or using a channel lock. You can also use a screwdriver with a flat blade to pull the cover off the wheel hub.

Step 3: Remove the hub from the ring

The split pin should be removed using needle nose tweezers, and the next step is to unscrew the bearing nut. You should be able to unscrew this nut with your fingers, but if it is too tight, you may need to use a large crescent wrench or adapter. The wheel hub can now be forcefully pulled down from the axle after being disconnected from it.

Step 4: Disconnect the bearings from the machine

The external wheel joint should detach from the wheel hub. To remove the inner bearing, pull it away from the hub washer and then remove the bearing from the bearing housing. During this process, the seal will be damaged and will need to be replaced in the future. Due to sealing, lubricating grease is kept inside the hub to prevent contamination from entering the bearings. Remove any traces of dirty oil from the wheel hub in order to inspect the components. At this point, it is also necessary to use a wire brush to clean the wheel hub studs on the vehicle.

Step 5: Check the parts for signs of wear

Use a clean cloth to roll the bearing to remove excess grease, and then carefully inspect the bearing for damage. The slope between the rim and the cage is acceptable, but if there is any rolling friction or vibration when the roller rotates, the roller should be replaced. If pits corrode, or bearings or tracks corrode, they must be replaced as a whole with the bearings or races. You can use a chisel and hammer to remove the seat ring from the wheel hub, and after carefully removing the seat ring, carefully tap it onto the intersection with a workpiece to replace the seat ring. To check if the spindle is worn, please wipe it with a cloth and carefully inspect it; It should be completely smooth and shiny. Because if the spindle is not smooth, the bearings will quickly wear out. Therefore, if the spindle is not smooth, it is necessary to replace the bearings.

Step 6: Clean and package the bearings

Spoon a piece of ping-pong ball sized grease from the base of your palm, and while rotating the new bearing, rub it against the edge of the new bearing, so that any gap between the wheel flange and the cage is covered with new grease. When packaging other bearings, place each bearing on a clean cloth.

Step 7: Start the assembly process

After setting it in the hub, push the seal into the inner bearing and begin installing it into the hub. To install the seal, use a seal driver or sleeve with the same diameter as the outer edge of the seal. Ensure that the seal is replaced with a new seal that is the same size as the old seal and flush with the wheel hub.

Step 8: Connect the hub

Carefully place the hub on the spindle, taking care not to damage the newly placed seal. Once the hub is installed on the spindle, the external bearing can be installed on the axle and locked in the hub position. Insert the washers and bolts as tightly as possible with your fingertips - do not use tools to tighten them again. This nut may be tightened too tightly, putting too much pressure on the bearing, causing it to overheat and fail. By rotating the hub, check whether the hub is easy to roll and whether the resistance is minimum. The slotted nut is designed with a groove that allows the cotter pin to be inserted into the nut through the hole at the spindle tip. After threading the nut through the spindle, turn the key to keep it in place.

Step 9: Make the wheels harder

A hammer should be used to lightly tap the gland or bearing partner onto the end of the shaft to tighten the gland or bearing. Place the wheel on the axle and coat the thread of the lug nut with anti-seize solution to prevent it from sticking. If necessary, gently fix all bolts to the wheels, center them, and then tighten them crosswise. For most snowmobile trucks, tighten to approximately 80 lb.ft; Consult the dealer or trailer operator
