The steel pintle chain gets its characteristic name from its design. A pintle is a pin or bolt, typically inserted into a socket-like cylindrical fitting known as a gudgeon. Applying this way of attachment to chain links allows pivoting or hinging connection to a second, similar component which builds up a solid yet flexible chain for conveying heavy material. Steel pintle chain consists of a barrel and link as a single casting. Each casting is then connected with a steel pin to the next, forming a chain. The castings and linkage provide increased strength compared to other chains, allowing a wider range of applications.
