The drum is bolted to the wheel hub and rotates with the wheel. The brake shoes and wheel brake cylinders are connected to a fixed backing plate made of thick metal. Drum brake diagram dual servo rear drum brake. The back plate is fixed to the axle or spindle with bolts. Anchors riveted or bolted to the backing plate provide a stopping device for the brake shoes. In some vehicles, a single anchor point is placed at the top (dual servo), while in other vehicles, it is placed at the bottom (non servo), as shown in the following figure. Non servo settings are mainly used for small cars. When the driver presses the brake pedal, the hydraulic pressure generated in the brake master cylinder passes through the hydraulic brake system and pushes the piston out of the wheel brake master cylinder. The piston pushes out the brake shoes. Therefore, the friction material (lining) contacts and slows down the rotation of the brake drum. The drum absorbs and dissipates the heat generated.
