Do I Need Trailer Brakes on My Trailer?

Any trailer carriage or camping trailer with a total weight of 1500 pounds or more requires braking. Under normal circumstances, the braking capacity of the tractor is good; However, this may not be enough to safely stop the increase in trailer weight by hundreds to thousands of pounds. Most traditional and five wheel trailers have electric brakes that are activated by controllers in the tractor. The controller automatically coordinates the braking of the tractor and trailer, so that the two systems work together when the brake pedal is pressed.The controller also helps to stabilize trailers that sway due to adverse road conditions. Using the manual lever on the controller to manually apply the trailer brake will stabilize the trailer that may swing.Folding camping trailers and marine trailers are usually equipped with surge braking systems that operate separately from the brakes of the towing vehicle.The buffer brake is applied by a mechanism connected to the receiver/ball joint. When the towing vehicle slows down, the forward motion of the trailer compresses the mechanism, which in turn applies the trailer brakes.Motorcycle trailers do not require brakes unless their total weight exceeds 1500 pounds.
