12′ Electric Brake Heavy Duty

The magnet in the backing plate has 2 conductor wires which tap directly into the trailer wiring. When electricity is on, it magnetizes the brake magnet. The magnet is attracted to the drum face. When it contacts this area, the friction causes it to rotate, which moves the actuating arm, and pushes the shoes out against the drum. Those shoes have a special brake pad material on them that resists the heat caused by that friction. When the shoes press against the inside of the drum, they prevent the hub, and consequently the wheel that's touching the ground from spinning.86439 Left/Right Trailer Brake 12′ Electric Brake Heavy Duty 7000lbs

How to Install Electric Brakes on Your Trailer?

  1. Firstly, you must remove the existing hub. Use your trailer as a support. Remove the wheel. The dust cover is a metal cover at the center of the wheel hub. Gently tap the screwdriver behind the "lip" and pry open the grease dust cover.Under this cover, you will see a large nut, along with a cotter pin, or in some new models, a small metal "clamp" on the nut. Straighten the split pin and remove it, or use a small screwdriver to pry the small metal clip off the nut. It just snapped on the nut and then bounced off.The nut should be loose. Remove the nut, which will have a washer and an "external" bearing behind it. If you don't catch them, they will fall to the floor. Remove the nut and gently pull the entire wheel hub off the axle.

  3. Next, find the correct backplane. These markings are left or right. If you sit in the driver's seat and look forward. The magnet is always at the bottom, and the 'arm' is always in front!Install the lock washer under the nut and tighten it. Pay attention to the two green brake lines (in this photo, one end is "plugged into the back panel"). On brake magnets, they are not positive or negative (they are not grounded), so it doesn't matter which wire is connected.
  4. Ensure that the outer bearing is lubricated, then place the hub, washer, and nut. Unscrew the nut and rotate the hub when tightening. When rotating, tighten to approximately 40 foot pounds (very tight to secure the bearings and hub). After tightening the nut, stop rotating the drum and gently loosen the nut until it is tightened with your fingers.
  5. Insert the cotter pin. If you don't do this, the nut will come off and you will loosen the tire!. If the nut is tightened too tightly, it will burn out the wheel bearings! It must just be fingers tight! If your axle has a metal "clamp" on the nut, simply align the plane of the hole with the plane of the clamp and then fasten it.
