What Size Trailer Ball Do I Need?

The size of the trailer ball needed for your towing setup will be determined by three things: your coupler size, trailer ball hole diameter and your towing capacity.

In short, your trailer ball diameter must match your coupler size, the shank diameter must fit the ball hole and the weight capacity must be enough to safely tow your trailer.

Step 1: Match the ball with the coupler size

When selecting a trailer ball, first select the ball diameter by matching it with the coupling size. Step 2: Match the handle with the trailer ball hole

The holes on the spherical support or bumper hitch platform are the locations where the trailer spherical bolts are fixed. It is important to know the diameter of this hole so that you can choose a trailer ball with a matching rod diameter.If the trailer handle is too small, it will shift and may become loose during towing. If the rod size is too small for the trailer ball hole, you can use a reducer bushing to compensate for the difference.

Step 3: Match the weight capacity of the traction system

When selecting a tow ball or any towing accessory, weight capacity must always be considered. The rated weight of the trailer ball will be listed as the ball capacity. Please note that this will reflect the total weight limit of the trailer, not the weight of the tongue.You must select a trailer ball with a capacity exceeding the total weight of the trailer.
