Take safety precautions when handling the Bevel Gear unit and the lubricant.♦ Never approach or touch any rotating parts during operation.♦ Damaged units should be taken offline and kept in operation until adequately serviced.♦ If the unit performs abnormally in any way, stop the unit immediately.

Rotary Cutter Gearbox Repair and Maintenance

Most of the problems on rotary cutter gearbox drive equipment are due to a lack of service and maintenance. An operator can check a few things before using their equipment.Always maintain proper oil levels. If a rotary cutter gearbox is run low, the bearings will not be adequately lubricated. If the rotary cutter gearboxes are overfilled, it will generate heat, cause the box to run hot, and possibly damage the seals.Check for free play in the input and output shafts. If any free space is present, it may be a sign of bearing wear or a change in bearing preload setting. Excessive free play will cause oil seal failure, thus causing a loss of lubricant and bearing and gear damage. In most cases, the bearing preload can be reset, eliminating all radial free play by either re-shimming or tightening the bearing adjustment nut.Most rotary cutter gearboxes require a breather to prevent pressure from building up inside the housing. Periodically check to ensure the breather is functioning correctly. If the pressure builds up in the box, it will cause the oil seal to rupture, and a loss of lubricant will occur.
