Types of PTO Yoke

The PTO yokes are available in 4 primary styles.- Plain bore. They are used to fit on machinery with plain (non-splined) shafts with keyways. These PTO yokes are supplied with keyways and grub screws or clamp bolts as required by the design of the PTO yoke.- Quick release. These PTO yokes are fitted with either one or two push-release pins (depending on the size) and are designed to provide splined shafts where the PTO shaft needs to be uncoupled regularly.- Clamp bolt. These PTO yokes are fitted with single or double clamping bolts (depending on the size). They are designed to provide splined shafts where the PTO shaft needs to be held securely in position and is only removed periodically for servicing etc. Commonly fitted to the implement end of a PTO shaft.- Tube yokes. These PTO yokes fit directly onto your PTO shaft's telescopic tube to form the universal joint's inner half. They are supplied with different bore sizes to suit the inner or outer tube section. This is welded to the drive end.Universal Joint- There are two PTO shaft universal joints located at both ends of the PTO shaft.External Yoke- There are two at both ends of the PTO shaft. How to Replace Yoke on PTO Shaft?

The needle bearings are in the end caps. Grease the old u- joint, then remove the retaining circling. Place the inboard end of the shaft in a vise with one of the caps in the PTO yoke pointed straight up. Hold the end of the shaft with your left hand and strike the end near the end cap forcing it down and the joint end cap up, be careful don't strike too hard and eject the end cap onto the floor, spilling the needle bearings. I force the cap almost out, then twist it with vise grips for the final remove. Ensure all the bearings are in the end cap, set it aside, and repeat on the other side. Be careful; remember you have one side of the joint flopping around, which could cause damage to the needle bearings. After both end caps are removed, remove the old PTO yoke and replace it with the new, used one. Replace the end caps, and after ensuring, they are on, use the vise to force them in. You will need a small socket to set on the cap between the cap and vise to move the end cap far enough to reinsert the retaining circlip.

Triangular End Yoke Maintenance

Maintenance on these units is straight forward, and like all moving parts, these need their fair share of grease and should be greased regularly as these components work very hard and are subject to all that nature can provide for wear and tear. Good grease is essential here; put grease in until you see the old grease oozing out. Go easy on the "U" joints, so you don't blow the seals. Short bursts of a low-pressured air grease gun or, even better, a hand pump gun will do the job and should be done based on hourly use. At least once a season, the primary and secondary shafts should be separated. All debris and any rust should be cleaned off. Examine thoroughly for any signs of stress and apply a liberal amount of grease. In addition, both the PTO yoke holes need grease inside of them at least once a year, along with the yoke lock pin.
