How do wheel hubs work?

The hub assembly holds the brake rotor, which typically slides on the lug studs and forms the attachment point for the wheel. Inside the hub is a bearing or the bearing race. The front hub creates a fixed attachment point for the wheel to roll and turn as you drive the vehicle. The rear hub is largely held in place while it swivels on the rest of the suspension. Hubs rarely break or wear out, but the bearings inside are eventually replaced with age and wear. Seized fasteners often make the hub difficult to remove and replace.

How are wheels made?

Wheel hubs are usually made from steel or aluminum castings or forgings. Steel is the more common material used to make wheel hubs. After forging, the blank part must be machined to the final dimensions.

Why maintain hub assemblies and wheel bearings

First, there are a few things to know about this process. Before about 1997, most vehicles were equipped with inner and outer wheel bearings, both of which needed to be replaced. Front-wheel drive vehicles often have sealed wheel bearing assemblies which are more difficult to repair; some drivetrain components may need to be removed, and you will need to press new bearings into the hub, which means leaving this type of bearing to the professionals easier. The wheel hub assembly is located between the brake drum/disc and the drive shaft and is mounted on the fixed bracket of the chassis on the axle side. On the drum/disc side, the wheel is bolted to the hub assembly. The wheel bearing itself is located inside the hub unit. These low-maintenance components must take the vehicle's load, whether in motion or stationary. Their importance is accentuated as you drive over potholes and another rough terrain. And, even though they are low maintenance, these wheel bearings are certainly not maintenance-free. Your goal is to minimize the friction the wheel bearings create. This can be achieved by using high-quality grease specially designed for high temperatures. However, be careful not to apply too much grease, as this can cause overheating due to friction that doesn't dissipate properly. Damage can occur with repeated overheating events. And, even though proper grease application helps these parts last longer, they will eventually need to be replaced. Generally, you should inspect and maintain wheel bearings every 25,000 to 30,000 miles. A sealed wheel bearing can last an average of 85,000 to 100,000 miles, although some bearings can last as long as 150,000 miles.
