Parts of a Pto Shaft

You must understand sizes, measuring, horsepower, and agriculture PTO shaft parts to choose the proper PTO shaft for your farm machinery. Though the yokes and U-joints are necessary for function, the safety chains and shield are essential parts of the PTO shaft to keep you safe during use.

• Internal Yoke- There are two, located at both ends of the PTO shaft -tractor and implement. This is welded to the drive end.
• Universal Joint- There are two at both ends of the PTO shaft.
• External Yoke- There are two at both ends of the PTO shaft. It has a "Y" shape to connect to the U-joint and a female hole.
• Safety Chains- The chains secure the PTO shaft onto the equipment and the tractor.
• Safety Shield- These cones are found on both ends.

Three Different Types of Pto Shafts

The type of PTO shaft you choose definitely depends on the job you need to do. If you're plowing, mowing, or shredding, there is a Power Take-Off shaft that is best for each task and helps guard your machinery against unnecessary pressure, hits, or tension.

Non-Shear PTO Shaft

This is designed for equipment not projected to meet sudden halts. It's a yoke-to-yoke arrangement. This can be used for large mowers, as the movements will be smooth, and there shouldn't be times of resistance or stopping.

Shear Pin PTO Shaft

The end yoke is in two pieces and uses a shear pin to hold them together for operation. The pin absorbs the shock if there is a sudden stop to avoid damaging the driveline. It can be used with equipment such as a chipper.

Slip Clutch PTO Shaft

Slip Clutch is designed to protect your tractor and your attached equipment from being damaged by internally sliding- allowing movement when an object is struck. For example, as the seasons change, rocks and stones come to the surface, and when you hit them, you want the shock absorbed, so you don't cause damage to the gearbox.

PTO Shaft Length Limit

The Power Take Off (PTO) shaft is the system that delivers power to your implement. It is, therefore, essential to understanding how it operates to ensure user safety. It is also imperative to be aware of maintenance requirements to prevent potential mechanical problems. PTO shafts have a rating and are not necessarily interchangeable between tractors or implements. It is, therefore, essential to fit the correct shaft to the tool according to the manufacturer's specifications and to ensure it is the right length.

• Length: The length of the PTO shaft is determined when setting up an implement on a tractor for the first time. If shortening of the PTO shaft is required, the operator must use the supplier's formula to cut the shaft to the correct length. This is usually done by taking measurements from the tractor output shaft and implementing the input shaft to where the PTO shaft will be at its shortest.
• Too long: If your PTO shaft is too long (or if the telescopic tubes have seized), "end thrust" can occur, which can destroy your tractor's internal PTO drive or implement clutch and gearbox, potentially voiding your machine warranty.
• Too Short: If the shaft is too short, it could potentially separate from the implement posing major safety issues and possible damage.

How do Cutting a PTO Shaft to the Right Length?

If the PTO shaft is too long, it might bind when the three-point hitch is lifted. Damage might be caused to the bearing of the chipper or the PTO of the tractor. If the PTO shaft is too long, it must be cut.   Equal amounts must shorten both PTO halves.1. Mount the chipper on the three-point hitch of the tractor.2. Cut the engine and remove the keys.   Lower the chipper on a firm and level surface.3. Lift the three-point hitch so that the power intake shaft of the chipper is at the same height as the PTO of the tractor. The PTO and the power intake should be closest to each other at that position.4. Pull the PTO shaft apart. Connect one half of the shaft to the chipper, so the locking pin is locked. Place the other end of the chipper flush with the end of the tractor's PTO. Lay the side of the end by the side. Mark on the shield how much must be cut off. The tubes must be so short that they cannot reach the bottom in any chipper position.5. Cut the plastic tube.6. Cut a piece from the profile tube, the same length as the piece you cut off of the shield. Shorten the other half of the PTO shaft to the same length.7. File sharp edges off of the profile tubes.

PTO Shaft Maintenance

The PTO shaft should be greased regularly to keep the universal joints from failing and to stop the shaft from seizing. Failure to lubricate your shaft regularly or as outlined in the PTO shaft's maintenance schedule could result in end thrust potentially destroying the implement's gearbox. It is recommended to grease standard universal joints every 20 hours or 8 hours for severe conditions. Remember! Grease follows the most straightforward path through internal ports to the four cross bearings. Overheating and poor-quality grease baked in one port will prevent grease from reaching that bearing, failing individual cross bearings.Most importantly, ensure you fully open the guard cover to ensure grease flows to all cross bearings. Greasing through the small guard access hole is not good enough. Also, check the state of the PTO safety guards; if they are damaged or in poor condition, arrange replacement assuring the operator's safety.
